When you’re facing a skin cancer diagnosis, you need a surgeon you trust completely. Dr. Margaret Mann is a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon with over 15 years of surgical experience and more than 15,000 Mohs surgery and reconstruction cases performed — right here in Hendersonville for patients throughout Sumner County.

You don’t have to travel to Nashville or a major medical center for the gold-standard treatment in skin cancer surgery. It’s here.

What Is Mohs Micrographic Surgery?

Mohs surgery is one of the most effective treatments for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, the two most common types of skin cancer. With cure rates as high as 99% for certain skin cancers, Mohs surgery offers an important advantage: removing the cancer while saving as much healthy skin as possible.

How Does Mohs Surgery Work?

Unlike traditional skin cancer surgery, Mohs surgery removes cancer one thin layer at a time. After each layer is removed, Dr. Margaret Mann personally examines the tissue under a microscope to check for any remaining cancer cells.

If cancer is still present, she removes another thin layer only where it is needed. This process continues until no cancer cells are found at the examined edges.

Why Choose Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery provides three important benefits:

  • Highest cure rates: Up to 99% for certain newly diagnosed skin cancers.
  • Preserves healthy skin: Removes only the tissue necessary to clear the cancer, minimizing scarring.
  • Precise results: Cancer is checked under the microscope during your visit, rather than waiting days for pathology results.

Mohs surgery is especially beneficial for skin cancers on the face, nose, ears, eyelids, lips, hands, and feet, where preserving healthy skin is important for both appearance and function.

At Innova Dermatology, Dr. Mann personally performs every stage of your Mohs surgery, providing expert, individualized care from start to finish.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Mohs Surgery

1

Arrival

Arrive at our Hendersonville office. Plan for a half to full day — the number of stages varies by case.

2

Local Anesthesia

Dr. Mann administers local anesthesia. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you remain awake and comfortable throughout the surgery.

3

Tissue Removal

A thin, precise layer of tissue is removed around the visible cancer site.

4

Microscopic Examination

You wait comfortably in our office while Dr. Mann examines the removed tissue under a microscope during the same visit.

5

Additional Stages if Needed

If cancer cells are detected at any margin, another precise layer is removed only from that specific location.

6

Wound Closure Planning

Once margins are completely clear, Dr. Mann plans your wound closure with careful attention to both healing and cosmetic outcome.

7

Recovery & Follow-Up

You return home the same day with detailed wound care instructions and a personalized follow-up plan from our team.

Note: Mohs surgery is performed in stages to ensure all cancer cells are removed while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. Because each stage requires microscopic examination, the total appointment time varies from patient to patient.

Annual Skin Cancer Screenings

Regular skin cancer screenings can help identify suspicious changes early. The appropriate screening frequency depends on individual risk factors, including a personal or family history of skin cancer, significant sun exposure, fair skin, numerous moles, or a history of tanning bed use.

Our skin cancer screenings include a full-body exam by Dr. Mann or one of our physician-supervised PAs.

We check every area of skin systematically. If a concerning spot is found, we can often perform a same-day biopsy so you leave with answers — not just questions.
