Not just skin deep….

Did you know the skin is the largest organ in the body? As adults, we carry some 8 pounds and 22 square feet of it everywhere. While we often think about it’s external appearance, it’s true function is more than skin deep. The skin provides protection, helps us regulate our temperature, and allows us to feel the enviroment around us. As the protector of our body, the skin acts as a waterproof shield, defensing us against the elements– chemicals, microorganisms, and even the sun. The skin guards us against the extremes of temperature. The blood vessels on the skin constricts to keeping us warm in the cold. In the heat, our skin sweats to dissipate the warmth.

As a huge sensing organ, the skin also keeps our brain in touch with the outside world. So take care of it properly, and it will take care of you!
