He than completed his MD & PhD degrees at the oldest and largest NIH-funded program in the nation, Washington University in St. Louis, MO, and stayed on to complete his medical internship and dermatology residency. Dr. Popkin than spent 4 ½ years in Northern San Diego performing biomedical research at the world-famous “TSRI” (The Scripps Research Institute) with Nobel Prize winner Bruce Beutler MD and seeing patients as a private Dermatologist for Scripps Clinic.

In 2012, Dr. Popkin and his wife joined the faculty of Case Western Reserve University & University Hospitals where Dr. Popkin established a laboratory studying chronic viral immunology with an emphasis on HIV cure strategies as well as fundamental topics in skin biology and pathogenesis. Evaluation Comments:
I appreciate that Dr. Popkin can help me staff my patients in a straightforward manner. Unlike some of the other VA faculty, I am not worried about staffing with him and am not concerned that he will have a lengthy patient interaction setting me behind schedule. I appreciated that he is to the point but also is able to teach within this time frame as well.
